Pranava - 2013

An interactive, digital, audio-visual installation that deals with vibration and makes sound visible.

Details

A computer running custom software (PureData) generates tones and modifies prerecorded sound. Hidden speakers attached to the computer are situated below a stretched canvas placed horizontally as a vibrating surface. The canvas is covered with poppy seeds. A video camera records the movement of the seeds and displays it on a TV monitor. The computer is controlled wirelessly by an iPad running a customized interface based on TouchOSC.

Artist's Statement

The interactive installation "Pranava" plays with the Eastern idea of the seed sound that gives rise to all creation. "Pranava" invites the viewer to participate in the creative act by manipulating the sound/vibration generated by a custom computer program and view the results on TV.
